Photographed Black-footed Albatross in Monterey Bay with leg bands. I called the Bird Banding Office in Marland and left a message. I would like to know where the bird was banded and how old it is. Most likely it was banded on Midway Island!
I work on a whale watching boat in Monterey Bay and have reported a few different leg bands on Black-Footed Albatross on the bird banding web site but have yet to get a reply. Last spring and summer I counted a total of about 15 birds, about 8 of them having the plastic and metal band the others just metal. I mainly see yellow bands but have also seen a few blue and one red. I got the numbers off the red and a few yellow but like I said no reply from Bird Banding Lab... Im curious to find out what colors cover which banding area... Mike
I traced it back to Tern Island French Frigate Shoals in Hawaii. The woman below confirmed it was their banding protocol. However, they did not supply any other information. I do believe they filed a report. Her e-mail is Cindy_Rehkemper@fws.gov.
